Introduction

This program is able to produce a competent and conversant workforce in the area of banking and finance to meet market demand in both national and international level. Career prospects in this industry include finance and Islamic banking institutions as well as other institutions which offer and practice Islamic concepts/principles as a way of conducting business.
Program Structure
The structure of the programme is specifically designed to include vital aspects in Islamic finance and banking in addition to the understanding of elements in conventional finance and banking coupled with other fields relevant to strengthen the knowledge to meet growing demand by the industry.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

D. FREE ELECTIVE (3 CREDIT HOURS)
Students can choose any course offered by other programs within the same faculty or any course offered by other faculties subject to the followings:
a. Must fulfill pre-requisite course if any.
b. Equivalent courses are NOT considered as free elective.

Total Overall Credits Hours: 118 Credit Hours
Semester System
Universiti Utara Malaysia operates on semester system. Each academic session consists of two semesters which commences in July and November. Students must attend fourteen (14) week of lectures and tutorials in each semester and followed by three (3) weeks of examination. Under normal circumstances, to qualify for a degree, a student is required to satisfy a minimum duration of six (6) semesters. Within this period, they must complete a minimum number of credits specified by each programme. Students’ achievements are continuously evaluated throughout the semester.

Students will earn grade point for each course taken. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be calculated at the end of each semester. This calculation will continue until a student has successfully completed the amount of credits that is required for each programme.

In order to qualify for a degree, a student must achieve Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.00. If he/she failed to achieve CGPA of 2.00 in his/her final semester, a student may continue until the tenth (10) semester. In certain cases the University Senate will consider exemptions in the form of transfer of credit. A student granted with such an exemption will be able to graduate in less than six (6) semesters.

Students who apply for transfer of credit must prove the course that the course they have taken at another institution is equivalent value with the one offered by University.

Admission Requirements
 
i) SPM
  • A pass in SPM/equivalent and;
  • Credit in Bahasa Malaysia/Bahasa Melayu
    (A pass with at least grade E in Bahasa Melayu/Malay Literature at STPM level can be accepted as a substitute for the credit in Bahasa Malaysia/Bahasa Melayu at SPM level)
  • A pass in English and
  • Credit in Mathematics/Additional Mathematics
    ( A pass in Mathematics/Additional Mathematics and credit in Principal of Accounting/Elementary Economics/Commerce at SPM level can be accepted as a substitute for the credit in Mathematics/Additional Mathematics)
or
ii) STPM
  • Pass at one sitting of the STPM examination with at least;
  • Grade E in Pengajian Am/Kertas Am and;
  • Grade E in two other subjects
or
iii) DIPLOMA
  • Possesses Diploma or other qualifications recognized by the Malaysian government and accredited by the UUM senate;
and
 
iv) Taken the Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Financial
Students can apply for scholarships/loans from various organizations namely JPA/MARA, PTPTN, the State Governments, statutory bodies and the private sector. Details can be obtained directly from the respective establishments mentioned. Advertisements for the offer of scholarships/loans will usually be placed in local newspapers.

To assist students, the Students Affairs Department will contact scholarship/loan sponsors from time to time for sources of aid.
